The University of Mary Washington softball team used a four-run seventh inning to come back and beat Roanoke in Game 1 of Tuesday's doubleheader in Fredericksburg, Va., 4-3. The Eagles fell in Game 2, 11-7.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 4-3.
In Game 1, the Eagles trailed by three runs heading into the final half inning of play. The Maroons had struck for a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings as the Eagles' pitching staff of
Sydney Jester and
Stephanie Csontos had been solid, yielding just a pair of earned runs in their seven combined innings of work.
In the bottom of the final inning, UMW finally got the offense going as
Linsey Spillman worked a one-out walk to give UMW life.
Mia Farhat followed the walk with a one-out single to move Spillman to second.
Maeve Haun then drew a walk to load the bases before
Sofia Ponce drove home a run with a single for UMW's first run of the afternoon.
A hitter later,
Emily Angel drove in a pair of runs with a single to tie the game at three with just one out before
Erica Shoop delivered her second walk off of the season as she drove in
Bayly Yerigan with an RBI single to give UMW the win, 4-3.
Game 2 - Eagles fall, 11-7.
In Game 2 of the doubleheader, both offenses came alive as Roanoke struck first with a double steal of second and home before the Eagles punched back for two more in the bottom of the first. Haun opened the scoring after sliding in safely on a wild pitch before Shoop drove home Yerigan with a ground out to give the Eagles the lead, 2-1.
In the second, Haun drove in a run with an RBI single before Kennedy Darlin scored on an error that pushed the Eagles' lead to 4-1. However, the Maroons struck back for four runs in the third, one in the fourth and three in the fifth to take the lead, 9-4. The Eagles then added three runs in the sixth that began with a Haun two-RBI double to left center before Yerigan scored on a wild pitch to pull UMW closer, 7-5.
But the Maroons added on to their lead with a pair of runs in the seventh.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for their Morgan's Message Game. First pitch in the doubleheader in Fredericksburg is set for 1 p.m.
