The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 69-46 decision at Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon. The Eagles slip to 9-13 on the season.
A
Maddy Jenisch three pointer helped the Eagles to a 7-2 lead at the outset, and the Eagles carried the lead until CNU connected on a three pointer with 3:31 left in the first.
Jenna Steadman responded with a three to put the Eagles back on top, but the Captains ended the frame with an 8-2 run to lead, 21-16, after ten minutes.
After the teams traded three pointers to open the second, Steadman added another basket to pull the Eagles to within 24-21. Another Steadman three stopped a CNU run with 5:04 left, and
Julianna Fisher added another to pull the Eagles back to within five, at 31-26, but CNU finished on an 8-2 run to lead, 39-28, at halftime.
A three pointer from Jenisch pulled UMW to within 39-31, but the Captains built on their lead through the third to lead, 60-40, after 30 minutes. The scoring slowed in the fourth, with UMW outscored, 9-6, for the final score.
Sophomore
Juliona Mabie led the Eagles with 10 points, while Steadman and Jenisch each scored nine.
Rileigh Weaver pulled in six rebounds, as did
Emma Terry, to go with her six assists.
Mary Washington shot 34% (17-50), making 5-19 three point attempts and 7-18 free throws. CNU shot 43.9% (25-57), making 8-19 three point shots and 11-13 free throws. The Captains led, 40-35, in rebounds.
The Eagles will be back in action next Saturday at home against Salisbury University at 4:00 p.m.
