Despite solid shooting efforts from
Jadon Burgess (18 points) and
Kaden Bates (15 points), the No. 2-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell to No. 6 Randolph-Macon on the road in Ashland, Va. on Saturday afternoon in front of a vibrant crowd, 85-74.
Burgess led the Eagles from deep with a 4-of-6 evening, while Bates went 6-of-8 from the floor in the loss. Meanwhile,
Jay Randall added 12 points and
Ulysses Young scored 11 from the floor.
The Yellow Jackets opened the game with a 9-2 run in the first two-and-a-half minutes before Young nailed a jumper and a 3-pointer to pull UMW back in, 9-7, early. After some back-and-forth action throughout the opening 10 minutes, RMC was able to up its lead to 10 points at the 9:46 mark. But the Eagles were able to cut into the lead and trailed by only four points when Young hit a layup, 32-28, with just over five minutes to play in the first half.
But UMW was never able to cut into the deficit anymore as the Yellow Jackets finished the first half up by 10, 41-31, as the teams went into the locker rooms. In the second half, RMC lead by as many as 16, 53-37, at the 15:38 mark before an 11-4 Eagle run cut the Yellow Jacket lead to seven after three free throws from
Josh Sewordor. But that's the closest UMW would get to RMC as the Yellow Jackets ran away with the victory in the end.
For the day, UMW was 22-for-55 from the floor (40%), while nailing nine of its 22 3-pointer's (40.9%). Too, the Eagles got 21 of their points from the free throw line as RMC's physical-style of play sent UMW to the line 31 times. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets were 27-for-45 (60%) and were 12-for-21 from deep (57.1%). On defense, UMW forced 13 turnovers, coming away with nine steals as Bates led the way with four. Despite the height difference, UMW was only slightly out-rebounded, 29-28.
The Eagles are back in action next Saturday, Feb. 14 against No. 12 Christopher Newport in Fredericksburg, Va. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
