The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped its home opener, 15-6, to seventh ranked York College of PA on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.
York jumped ahead with a pair of goals in the first five minutes. The Eagles drew back to within 2-1 on an unassisted score from sophomore
Abigail Fisher with 8:32 remaining in the first. The Spartans scored four goals in the second, sandwiched by an Eagle tally from sophomore
Molly Ryan Gates with 5:55, on an assist from sophomore
Ava Windham. York led, 6-2, at halftime.
In the third, the Eagles drew to within 6-3 on a Fisher score on a man-up opportunity, assisted by junior
Anna Dube. York closed the third with three goals and opened the fourth with another, but UMW came back with a tally from sophomore
Sadie Laughlin at 13:20, and another from Fisher on a Dube assist at 11:12.Â
UMW pulled to within 10-6 on a
Seanna Ruimerman free position goal with 10:43 to go, but the Spartans reeled off five scores in the final 4:43 to pull away.
York led in shots, 27-18, as well as ground balls, 24-22. UMW goalkeeper
Cece Van Blenis made six saves between the pipes.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit ninth ranked Washington & Lee University at 5:00 p.m.
