Sophomore guard
Kye Robinson scored 30 points for the second straight night in surpassing the career 1,000 point mark to lead the eighth ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 91-77 victory at Southern Virginia University on Thursday night. The Eagles improve to 21-3 on the season.
The Eagles struggled out of the gate playing their second game in as many nights, as they trailed, 18-9, with 13:03 remaining in the first. From there, UMW went on a 13-0 run, keyed by three point baskets from junior
Jadon Burgess (two) and Robinson.
Sophomore
Colin Mitchell added a pair of three pointers to extend UMW's lead to 28-20with 6:56 left, and a pair of
Kaden Bates free throws with 5:15 on the clock pushed the lead to double figures, 32-22. Five points from Robinson and three pointers from Mitchell and junior
Hasan Hammad pushed the Eagle advantage to 45-30 at halftime.
In the second half, the Eagles maintained a double-digit lead until 12:24 left, when the Knights cut the deficit to 54-45. Southern Virginia pulled to within 57-50, but would never draw closer, as UMW shot better than 50% from the floor again to pull away.
Robinson scored 30 points on 9-19 shooting, making his only three point shot and went 11-13 from the free throw line. He passes 1,000 career points in just 54 career games played, and averaged 18.5 PPG in his career. He becomes the 24th player in school history to surpass 1,000.
Junior
Jay Randall went 7-8 from the floor en route to 19 points, and Mitchell netted 15 points on 5-8 shooting from three. Burgess scored 13 as well. Robinson also led with eight rebounds, four steals, and four assists.
UMW went 29-55 from the floor (52.7%), making 11-25 three point attempts and 22-25 free throws.Southern Virginia shot 45.5% (25-55), making 7-21 threes and 20-30 free throws. The Eagles forced 14 turnovers while committing just six.
The Eagles will close the regular season next Tuesday, when they visit UC Santa Cruz at 9:00 pm Eastern.
