Kye Robinson scored a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, and sophomore guard
Ulysses Young poured in 20 points to lead the seventh ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 76-52 victory at the University of California Santa Cruz on Tuesday night. The Eagles close the regular season with a record of 22-3.
The Eagles jumped out to a 7-2 lead at the outset on a three pointer from junior
Jadon Burgess and a pair of baskets from Robinson. Burgess added another pair of three pointers to build the lead to 16-9 with 13:21 left in the first, and the lead grew to double figures, at 23-13, on a Young jumper with 9:14 remaining.
Sophomore
Colin Mitchell and Young connected on three pointers to push the margin to 29-16, and another Mitchell three and four free throws from Robinson expanded the margin to 38-23 with 3:21 on the first half clock. Robinson capped the half with a traditional three point play to give the Eagles a 45-26 halftime margin.
The teams traded scores to open the second half, with Mitchell hitting yet another three to put UMW up, 54-32, with 14:54 left. The Banana Slugs were able to cut the deficit to 17, but three pointers from Young and Mitchell quickly put the lead back to 22, at 67-45. The Eagles were able to fend off the Bana Slugs the rest of the way for the 24-point win.
Robinson scored 21 points (11-13 on free throws), and added 10 rebounds, while Young scored 20, going 7-11 from the field. Mitchell scored 13, going 4-6 from behind the three-point line.Â
UMW shot 50% from the field (25-50), making 10-19 three point attempts and 16-20 free throws. Santa Cruz shot 32.7% (16-49), making 3-12 three point tries and 17-30 free throws.Â
The Eagles will remain in Santa Cruz for the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament, and will face the winner of Thursday's game between Salisbury University and Warren Wilson College on Friday at 6 p.m. Eastern time.Â
