UMW Women's Lax Breaks Away from Randolph-Macon, 8-5, in 2026 Opener

Junior Abigail Fisher scored four goals and added one assist, and junior goalkeeper Cece Van Blenis allowed just one goal after halftime as the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team opened the 2026 season with an 8-5 win at Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday evening.

The Yellow Jackets jumped ahead with the first two scores of the game, but sophomore Ava Windham put the Eagles on the board with 10:24 left in the first. UMW scored the first two goals of the second, both coming from Fisher, at 6:04 and 4:00, but the Yellow Jackets answered with two of their own to move ahead, 4-3, at halftime.

The third quarter was decisive, as the Eagles outscored RMC, 5-0, to pull ahead and away. Olivia Griffin scored on a Sadie Laughlin assist at 14:04, and Fisher added an other unassisted at 13:11. Laughlin followed on a Fisher assist with 12:29 left, for UMW's third score in 1:35 of game play. Windham added another at 7:30 and Fisher capped the scoring at 5:57 of the third. RMC posted one goal in the fourth.

The Eagles held a 29-18 shot advantage, and picked up 24 ground balls to 15 for the hosts. Van Blenis made 10 saves while allowing just five goals in gaining the win between the pipes.

UMW will return to action on Saturday when they host #7 ranked York College of PA at 1:00 p.m. in the home opener.
