The University of Mary Washington softball team fell to Sweet Briar on Wednesday in a doubleheader in Sweet Briar, Va.
Game 1 - UMW loses, 11-8.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 5-0 lead in the fourth inning that began like this:
Shelby Presgrave doubled home
Kennedy Darling to start the scoring.
Ari Biddle reached reached on an error to the shortstop that scored Presgrave to make the score, 2-0.
Erica Shoop then singled home Biddle before
Bayly Yerigan singled home another run as Shoop scored on a throwing error on the same play.
The Vixens got a run back in fourth and another in the sixth to cut into the Eagles lead, 5-2. An RBI triple from Sweet Briar added another run to cut into the UMW lead, 5-3, then a bases-loaded walk and an RBI single tied the game at the five apiece.
In the eighth, an error allowed a run to score for UMW to take a 6-5 lead, then
Emily Angel sent a bomb over the wall to increase the lead to 8-5. But Sweet Briar responded with a six-run bottom half that included a walk-off grand slam.
Game 2 - UMW loses, 13-8.
In Game 2, UMW jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when
Kennedy Darling stole home, but a pair of RBI doubles in the bottom of the first gave Sweet Briar a 2-1 lead. Three runs came to score for UMW in the second on
Maeve Haun's 2-RBI double that yielded another run on an errant throw back in. In the same frame, Yerigan drove in a run with a single before scoring on a wild pitch. And finally, Presgrave singled home Angel to conclude a six-run frame that gave UMW a 7-2 lead.
In the bottom of the second Sweet Briar responded with three runs to cut into the lead, 7-5. The Vixens added four more runs in the third to take the lead, 9-7. The Eagles got a run back, 9-8, when Angel's RBI groundout scored a run, but that was as close as they'd get. The Vixens tacked on four more runs to come away with the win.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Va. First pitch for the double-header is set for 12 p.m.
