Kye Robinson scored 33 points and junior forward
Jay Randall provided a double double with 15 points and 11 rebounds to lead the eighth ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to an 88-72 victory over Salisbury University on Wednesday night at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles surpass the 20-win mark for the fifth time in program history, and improve to 20-3 on the season.
The Sea Gulls opened with the first five points of the game, but the Eagles answered with 18 of the next 21 points to grab an 18-8 lead with 5:46 elapsed. Robinsons cored 10 in the run, while junior forward
Jadon Burgess added six. A Randall jumper with 9:28 left lifted the margin to 28-15, and the lead stayed primarily in double figures until Salisbury scored the last basket of the half to draw to within nine, at 41-32, at halftime.
Randall started the second half with a pair of buckets to push the lead to 13, but Salisbury pulled back to within 61-54 with 10:45 left. Six straight Eagle points returned the lead to 13, at 9:22 remaining, and swelled to as many as 14 on a three point play from junior
Hasan Hammad with 7:12 to go. Robinson connected on four free throws down the stretch for the 16-point margin of victory.
Robinson made 10-14 field goal attempts and 10-11 free throws en route to his 33 points, and added seven rebounds and five assists. Randall scored 15 on 7-10 field goals,a nd Burgess scored 11 on 3-8 shooting.
The Eagles shot 56.1% from the field, including 16-24 in the second half, making 9-20 three point attempts in the contest, and 15-19 free throws. Salisbury shot 46.9% (30-64), with 5-21 on three point tries and 7-16 free throws. UMW led in rebounding, 36-30.
UMW will be back in action on Thursday at Southern Virginia University at 6:00 p.m.
