The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 17-8 decision to #20 Roanoke College on Saturday at the Battleground in the home opener. The Eagles slip to 1-1 on the season.
The Eagles fell behind early, as the Maroons scored the first four goals of the game in the first quarter. After starting the second with another score, Roanoke built a 5-0 lead, before the Eagles responded with a goal from senior
Dave Votapek at 9:08. The Maroons would then score two more, but UMW answered with goals from
Logan Klinger at 2:43 and
Tucker Bradley at 1:41, both assisted by
Reece Stone. RC capped the frame with another, bringing the score to 8-3 at halftime.
In the third, it was the Eagles who scored first, as senior
Jacob Fowler scored following a faceoff win. Roanoke added the next two, but again UMW bounced back, with goals from Klinger at 10:55 and
Jackson Rhodes at 10:08. Roanoke scored the final goal of the quarter to elad, 11-6, after 45 minutes.
The Eagles pulled to within 11-7 as Votapek scored on a Fowler assist at 14:40, but the Maroons then netted five straight to pull away. Rhodes scored a man-up goal on a
Tanner Boone assist with 2:55 left.
The Eagles led in shots, 38-33. and Roanoke grabbed 41 ground balls to 40 for UMW. Eagles goalkeeper
Ryan D'Angelo made eleven saves on the day.
UMW will be back in action on Friday, as the Eagles host randolph-Macon College at 4:00 p.m.
