Jay Randall continued his stellar play with a career high-tying 29 points and nine rebounds, as the seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team scored a 70-49 victory over Swarthmore College on Tuesday evening at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 13-1 on the season.
The Eagles built its lead in the first 10 minutes, using a 9-0 run to open up a 23-9 lead with 9:46 left in the first. Randall scored five in the run, and sophomore
Kye Robinson added four. Swarthmore trimmed the margin to 12, before baskets from Robinson and junior
Jadon Burgess upped the lead to 34-18 with 2:31 remaining. The Eagles held a 36-23 advantage at halftime.
In the second, Swarthmore opened on a 14-2 run to pull to within one. Burgess stemmed the tide with a jumper, kick starting a 12-0 Eagle spurt. with Randall netting six in the run. A layup from Randall upped the score to 63-44 with 2:48 left, and the Eagles closed on a 5-0 run for the 70-49 victory.
Randall went 13-20 from the floor, making his only three point attempt, and added a pair of free throws to go with nine rebounds. Robinson scored 19 on 6-14 shooting and posted six rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Kaden Bates added eight points, five rebounds, and three steals, and Burgess scored eight as well.
The Eagles shot 26-57 from the floor (45.6%), making 4-14 three point attempts and 14-19 free throws. Swarthmore shot 19-62 (30.6%), making 5-28 three point attempts and made 6-11 free throws. UMW held a 42-36 rebounding edge.
UMW will be idle until January 17, when the Eagles host Regent University at 3:00 p.m.
