UMW Women's Basketball Wins Third Straight as Eagles Down Swarthmore, 68-46

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team continued its recent roll as the Eagles won their third straight games -- their fourth victory in their last five tries -- against Swarthmore on Monday, 68-46, in Fredericksburg, Va.

Rileigh Weaver (17 points, 12 rebounds) earned her second double-double of the season after going 6-of-11 from the floor, while Juliona Mabie added 15 more points on a 7-of-15 line, adding six rebounds and five assists. And Mackenzie Wharton scored 15 points after knocking down four of her seven 3-pointer's as the trio outscored Swarthmore by a point.

To begin Monday's game, though, the Eagles trailed by three, 18-15, at the end of the first quarter, but that's when UMW began to shut the Swarthmore defense down in the second period. The Eagles held their opponent to just three points in the second, coming away with 19 of their own to take a 34-21 lead into the half. In the first half, UMW held Swarthmore to just a 8-for-28 mark from the floor (28.6%), while knocking down 12 of their 35 shots that included five 3-pointer's.

And in the final half, UMW began to run away with the game, out-scoring Swarthmore, 34-25, to come away with the blowout win. Overall, the Eagles held Swarthmore to just a 16-for-55 (29.1%) from the floor and an abysmal 2-for-17 mark from deep (11.8%). Too, they forced 14 turnovers and came away with nine steals, winning the rebounding margin, 50-31. On offense, UMW went 25-for-64 (39.1%) from the floor and was 8-for-18 from beyond the arc (44.4%).

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Regent in Virginia Beach, VA. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
