The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team took down Regent on the road in convincing fashion on Saturday afternoon in Virginia Beach, Va., 80-33, to win its fourth game in a row.
UMW came out of the gates with energy and intensity, jumping to an early lead and building momentum -- the Eagles took a 19-11 lead at the end of the first quarter and a 40-25 lead by halftime. And after the break, UMW followed with a dominant third quarter — where it outscored Regent by 20 points — essentially put the game out of reach. In the final period, the Eagles held Regent to just one point, while scoring 13 of their own.
Junior guard
Jenna Steadman spearheaded the offensive attack with a team-leading 18 points on 8-of-11 shooting, that included a pair of treys. First-year forward
Hannah Warschaw was perfect from the field as she knocked down all five of her shots for 10 points.
Mackenzie Wharton added eight points, while
Rileigh Weaver,
Maddy Jenisch, and
Julianna Fisher all scored seven each in the Eagles' team victory.
As a team, UMW nailed half of its shots (33-for-66) from the floor, which included five 3-pointer's and 50 points in the paint.
Defensively, Mary Washington was suffocating, as the Royals shot just 13-of-53 from the floor (24.5%) and were 3-for-18 from deep (16.7%). The Eagles held Regent to just 33 points, forcing turnovers and challenging shots throughout the contest, limiting second-chance opportunities and controlled the glass, with a 43-24 rebound advantage. UMW, too, forced 20 turnovers, coming away with 12 steals.
And by the final buzzer, UMW had delivered one of their most complete efforts of the season as the Eagles earned their fifth victory in their past six games.
Mary Washington is back in action on Saturday, Jan. 17 at Johnson & Wales in Charlotte, N.C. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m.
