The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team's four game win streak was snapped after a close loss to Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon in Charlotte, N.C., 64-61. Sophomore center
Juliona Mabie scored 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting as she led the way on offense for the Eagles.
The Eagles fell behind by eight going into the halftime break, but coming out of the half, they were the more dominant team in the third as they out-scored JWU by eight 17-9, tying the game on a
McKenna Huff free throw late in the period. Mabie did most of her damage in the third as she knocked down four of her five shots to score eight points. The defense, meanwhile forced five turnovers and yielded just three baskets on JWU's 14 attempts (21.4%).
And in the fourth quarter, the Eagles led at the 8:26 mark after a Mabie layup and again by a point at the 7:51 mark when Mabie made another basket. They'd hold the lead until the 4:15 mark, but jumped out ahead by four at the 3:02 mark, 61-57, after another Mabie basket and a Huff jumper. But in the final minutes, JWU went on a 7-0 run to take the lead and hold onto the win. The Eagles had a chance to tie it at the buzzer, but a miss ended the game in regulation.
For the game, UMW shot 24-of-58 from the floor (41.4%), nailing three treys, meanwhile Johnson & Wales was also 24-for-58 from the floor and hit a trio of 3-pointer's. The Eagles forced 23 turnovers with
Emma Terry coming away with four steals. UMW won the rebounding battle, 38-31.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 24 against Salisbury in Salisbury, MD. Tip-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
