The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team handled Regent on Friday night, 88-20, in Fredericksburg, Va. The Eagles were led by
Mackenzie Wharton's 21 points and five 3-pointer's, as well as
McKenna Huff's 13 points and
Julianna Fisher's 12.
The Eagles began the game quickly, jumping out to a 24-3 lead by the end of the first quarter -- holding the Royals scoreless until the 2:10 mark, where UMW had already jumped by by 19 points. To begin the scoring outburst,
Juliona Mabie nailed a layup before
Jenna Steadman added a layup and a free throw to push the lead to five. Huff added a 3-pointer, followed by two more Steadman free throws to push the lead to 10.
Huff added a jumper at the 3:47 mark before Wharton nailed the first of her five treys to push the lead to 15. Huff made a second jumper, then added a layup to extend UMW's 19-0 head-start over Regent. The second quarter was much of the same as the Eagles out-scored Regent, 20-6, in the period and took a 44-9 lead into the half. In the second half, Wharton scored 11 of her 21 points as she nailed a trio of treys, while Fisher scored 10 of her 12 points in the half.
Overall, the Eagles forced Regent into an 8-for-46 (17.4%) mark from the floor and a 1-of-17 (5.9%) mark from deep, while forcing 32 turnovers and coming away with 19 steals.
Maddy Jenisch led the way with seven steals, while Mabie, Steadman,
Emma Terry, and Huff all added a pair each. Too, UMW led on the boards, 55-26, as Fisher came away with nine rebounds and
Ainsley Phillips added eight more.
On offense, UMW went 36-for-75 from the floor (48%) and nailed seven of its 22 3-pointer's (31.8%) as Wharton (7-of-13), Huff (6-for-10), and Fisher (6-for-8) were all fantastic from the floor.
The Eagles, winners of six of their last eight, are back in action against Salisbury on Wednesday, Jan. 28 at 7 p.m. in Salisbury, Md.
