The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team used double figures from four scorers to down Salisbury in a close battle in Salisbury, Md. on Wednesday night, 52-50.
Juliona Mabie led the way on offense for UMW after scoring 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting. Rilegh Weaver added 12 points, while Jeann Steadman and
Maddy Jenisch added 10 each in the victory.
The Eagles opened the game up with a 13-11 lead at the end of the first quarter before falling behind at halftime, 33-26. But a big third quarter that included a 8-for-13 mark in the period led UMW back into the game as it entered the fourth with a 43-39 lead. The Eagles never gave up the lead and were able to stave off the Sea Gulls in the final minutes as they forced a turnover and a missed layup on the final two Salisbury possessions to come away with the win.
UMW ended the evening with a solid 24-for-58 mark from the floor (41.4%), using the front court duo of Mabie and Weaver to attack what the Sea Gulls lacked underneath the basket. On the defensive end, the Eagles held Salisbury to just a 18-of-65 mark from the floor (27.7%) and a 5-for-20 line from deep (25%) as they forced 19 turnovers and came away with seven steals. On the boards, Salisbury slightly out-boarded the Eagles, 43-40, but it was UMW who was able to come away with the victory.
The Eagles are back in action on at Christopher Newport (RV) on Feb. 7. Tip-off in Newport News is set for 2 p.m.
