Jay Randall scored a game-high 28 points, including four in the final 1:06 of regulation, to lead the fifth ranked University of Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 76-70 victory at 15th ranked Catholic University on Saturday afternoon in Washington, D.C. The Eagles improve to 12-1 on the season.
The game started with strong back and forth scoring, with the score tied on three occasions and multiple lead changes. With the score knotted at 16-16, Randall and sophomore guard
Kye Robinson each scored a pair of baskets to push the Eagle lead to 24-16 with 11:00 remaining in the first. Catholic responded with a 10-0 run to gain the lead, and the score stood tied at 26-26 with 6:34 left. The teams traded baskets down the stretch, with both teams heading to the halftime locker room in a 32-32 tie.
In the second, the teams continued to trade baskets, until scores from Randall and sophomore
Ulysses Young gave the Eagles a two-score lead at 50-46 with 11:33 left. UMW led by as many as five, before the Cardinals knotted the score at 57-57 with 7:32 on the clock. Catholic scored four of the next six points to grab the lead, but Randall and Robinson added baskets, and the margin went back and forth between a tied score and two-point UMW lead until the Cardinals went back ahead on a free throw with 1:53 on the clock.
Robinson connected on a free throw to tie the score, and Randall scored the next four points of the game before Young netted a pair of free throws to finish the scoring.
Randall made 11-13 field goal attempts and all six of his free throws en route to 28 points, and also tied for the team lead with eight rebounds. Robinson scored 21 points and added six rebounds, and junior
Jadon Burgess scored 13 points on 4-5 shooting. Junior
Kaden Bates tied for top honors with eight rebounds.
The Eagles shot 25-52 from the field (48.1%), making 5-17 three point attempts and 21-25 free throws. Catholic shot 23-51 from the field, making 6-19 three point tries and 18-22 free throws. UMW led in rebounding, 32-26.
The Eagles will return home on Tuesday to host Swarthmore College at 5:00 p.m.
