The University of Mary Washington women's soccer team didn't face much stress in its third victory to open the season in a 3-1 win over Southern Virginia in Buena Vista, Va.
It was all Eagles on offense in the first 30 minutes as they shot six of the seven times combined between the two teams and it was on UMW's sixth shot that it got its first goal when
Maci Landel found
Ellen Shine for the lead in the 30th minute. And just before halftime, Mary Washington found the back of the goal once more as
Taylor Garofalo found
Parker McCausland, who netted UMW's second goal of the night in the 42nd minute.
Mary Washington controlled the tempo all throughout the first half as it out-shot the Knights by seven, 8-1, and took one more corner than SVU did, 3-1.
In the second half, however, Southern Virginia was more aggressive as it out-shot UMW 6-3, but it made little difference on the scoreboard as both teams collected a goal each. In the 49th minute, Southern Virginia cut into UMW's 2-0 lead, but in the 57th minute it was
Layla Royster who iced the victory for UMW with her third goal of the season in as many games.
With the win, Mary Washington improved to 3-0 to start the 2025 season, out-shooting Southern Virginia 11-7 with seven shots on net. Keeper
Emily Orn collected her third victory of the season, allowing just one goal and collecting a pair of saves.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday as they face North Carolina Wesleyan at 2 p.m. at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg.
