Katie Royle provided the game winner in overtime, as the University of Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Bridgewater College, 2-1, in thrilling fashion on Wednesday night in Bridgewater. The Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.
The UMW Eagles dominated play throughout, outshooting the hosts, 24-1, on the night, but were unable to find the back of the cage throughout the opening 59:52. Bridgewater scored in the third quarter, but the Eagles scored on Scott's third goal of the young season with just eight seconds left.Â
In overtime, Royle took a pass from junior
Mackenzie Proffitt and provided the game winner, 1:47 into extra time, capping the night.
UMW led in penalty corners, 6-1. Eagle goalkeeper Tori WInans gained the win without a save.
The Eagles will return to action next Wednesday when they visit the University of Lynchburg, with a 6:00 p.m. first whistle.
