The University of Mary Washington cross country teams competed on Friday evening at the James Madison University Invitational, in their third straight meet to open the season hosted by an NCAA Division I school.
The women raced first, and were led by all-region sophomore
Lily Hoffman, who finished ninth overall with a time of 20:01 on the 5K course. First year
Celeste Hammond finished 26th at 21:49, sophomore
Ava Wray took 28th at 22:01, and sophomore
Addy Wallin was 29th at 22:04.
Katherine Armstrong was 32nd at 22:23,
Maddie Binkley was 34th at 23:08, and
Eyaya Fletcher took 37th at 23:08.9. UMW finished fourth among seven schools, and first among Division III schools.
On the men's side, sophomore
Nicholas Smerlis finished fourth overall at 27:47, while senior
Luke Blair was fifth at 27:52, and senior
Aidan Kimener took sixth at 27:54.
CJ Hulleman finished eighth at 28:17, and
Morgan Lehocky took ninth at 28:22.Â
Jimmy Volk finished 13th,
Trent Nichols was 14th, and
Rylan Sedlacek and
Robert Stetkevych rounded out the Eagles in the top 20 by taking 16th and 17th.
UMW finished second overall, behind just VMI, with 32 points.
Both teams will be back in action on October 3 at the Paul Short Invitational, hosted by Lehigh University.
