The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team used junior
Jack Sturman's first career goal -- and Wednesday's game-winner -- to soar past Bridgewater at Roy Gordon Field in Fredericksburg, Va.
After a back-and-forth first 30-or-so minutes, UMW's Sturman found the back of the net after a
Joseph Cruz and
Sammy Amorose found Sturman to the left of the 18-yard box. It was Sturman's left foot that connected on the one-timer, putting Mary Washington up a goal in the first half.
UMW later netted a pair of goals in the second half, the first one coming via the right foot on
Gerry Valoyi. On a corner, Amorose found Valoyi in a scrum in front of the net as Valoyi's right foot was able to beat the Bridgewater keeper to put UMW up by a pair, 2-0, in the 56th minute.
Once more Mary Washington scored when
Moises Argueta-Garcia was given a pass from
Micah Davis, who was found open by
Elliot Berg. Argueta-Garcia used his right foot to push the ball past the Bridgewater keeper into the back of the goal to increase UMW's lead to three.
UMW out-shot Bridgewater by five, 14-9, and had all three of its shots-on-goal go into the back of the net. Meanwhile, UMW's keeper
Tristan Kickbush recorded five saves in net, while
Zaine Asim had the last save in the final seconds of the game.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at Messiah in Grantham, PA. First touch is set for 5 p.m.
