The University of Mary Washington field hockey team built a 2-0 halftime edge, but 12th ranked Shenandoah University roared back to defeat the Eagles, 4-2, on Saturday afternoon at the Battleground in the home opener. The Eagles slip to 2-2 on the season.
The Eagles opened the scoring in the first, as
Mackenzie Proffitt caged her fourth goal of the season at 6:23 on a
Katie Royle assist. Proffitt added another at 25:41, again form Royle, and the Eagles led, 2-0, at halftime.
In the third, the Hornets scored a trio of goals 1:35 span to grab the lead, and added an insurance tally in the fourth.Â
Mary Washington led in shots, 17-13, as well as penalty corners, 15-10. Eagle goalkeeper
Tori Winans made four saves on the day.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday evening when they host another ODAC opponent in Washington & Lee University at 6:00 p.m.
