Proffitt's Big Day Leads UMW Field Hockey Past Roanoke, 5-1, in Opener

Junior Mackenzie Proffitt scored a pair of goals and added an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington field hockey team to a 5-1 victory at Roanoke College on Friday evening in Salem, Va. 

Senior forward Grayson Scott started the scoring on the day and season, caging a goal midway through the first quarter on a Proffitt assist. In the second quarter, the Eagles extended its cushion, as junior Elizabeth Stribling scored 1:30 into the quarter, and Proffitt added her first of the day with 7:33 remaining before halftime. The Eagles led, 3-0, at halftime.

Proffitt scored again 1:59 into the third quarter, and sophomore Anna Reed captured her first goal of the season with nine minutes left in the third on an assist from junior Katie Royle. Roanoke avoided the shutout with a score in the fourth quarter.

The Eagles led in shots, 16-4, and both teams attempted six penalty corners. UMW goalkeeper Tori WInans made one save in 56 minutes of action, and first year keeper Lenna Chandler turned in a clean sheet in four minutes of relief.

Mary Washington will be back in action on Wednesday, when the Eagles visit Bridgewater College at 7:00 p.m.
