The University of Mary Washington baseball team took home a thrilling victory over No. 9 Salisbury on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va., 4-3.
The Sea Gulls jumped out on the board first with a two-run single in the top of the second, but it was
Oliver Martin's RBI single in the bottom half to cut the deficit in half, 2-1.
In the fifth, Salisbury added another run, but the Eagles were able to tie the score up at three when
Burke Steifman's RBI groundout cut the lead to 3-2, then
Bobby Ayscue's RBI single tied it at three runs apiece.
And in the sixth, once the Eagles loaded the bases with no outs,
George Rizzo lifted a ball towards the Eagles' dugout on the first base line that was deep enough for
Noah Roots to think about scoring. Roots attempted to score from third, but wisely put on the brakes once the first baseman caught the ball in foul territory. But with Roots' fake-out, Salisbury's first baseman dropped the baseball on the exchange, allowing Roots to beat the throw with a head first dive into home to put UMW in front, 4-3.
And once the inning ended,
Matthew Boyd's day on the bump was finished for UMW as the righty polished off another excellent performance after tossing six innings of three-run ball. Boyd yielded six hits and one walk on 73 pitches to put himself in line for his third win of the season.
Brendan McComber tossed a shutout seventh and eighth innings, striking out the side in the seventh, while appearing in his 58th game as an Eagle -- a new program record. But as McComber worked into trouble in the ninth (a base hit and a walk) put runners on first and second with no outs.
But it was
Connor Hassan who collected his sixth save of the season to save the day. Hassan walked the first batter he faced, then got a ground out to put runners on second and third with an out. An intentional walk loaded the bases and then on the next pitch forced a double play to end the game.
The Eagles are back in action on Friday for the Coast-to-Coast Conference Tournament.
