The University of Mary Washington baseball team fell to Catholic on Wednesday evening, 7-1, in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Cardinals went up by four runs in the first two innings before adding another run in the fifth to push to the lead to 5-0. Mary Washington scored its lone run of the game in the bottom half when
Eric Powell stole second base, drawing a throw from the Cardinals catcher that allowed
Luke Guerzon to steal home to cut into the lead, 5-1.
Catholic added a run in the sixth and the ninth innings to extend its lead.Â
Nick Jordan came out of the bullpen in the third to stop the bleeding, he yielded just one run and struck out three as he ate innings for UMW ahead of its matcup with Randolph-Macon on Thursday, then against No. 7 Salisbury on Saturday.
Michael Liu tossed a shutout seventh, while
Griffin Graham pitched a shutout eighth. Meanwhile
Jacob Christenbury,
Bobby Ayscue,
Eric Powell,
Oliver Martin and Guerzon all recorded knocks for UMW.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday at 4 pm as they take on Randolph-Macon in Fredericksburg.
