The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept its Sunday doubleheader against Notre Dame of Maryland in Fredericksburg, Va.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 6-1.
The Gators got on the board first with a run in the top of the first, but the Eagles stormed back with a run to tie it in the first on
Ty Lowe's RBI single. Then in the second, UMW took the lead for good when
Jacob Christenbury drove a sac fly to center field, then
Connor Hassan drove a run in on a bunt to push the lead to 3-1.
In the third,
Tommy Martinez singled up the middle to drive in a run, then
Eric Powell drove in another with a sac fly to push the lead to 5-1. In the fifth, UMW added another on Christenbury's RBI single.
Justin Ritz tossed six innings of one-run ball (zero earned) and captured his team-leading sixth victory of the year while lowering his ERA to 1.08, while picking up seven strikeouts.
Game 2- Eagles win, 12-2.
In Game 2,
Brendan McComber was as dominant as ever, picking up a career-high in strikeouts with 13 and recorded his 200th career strikeout in the process. McComber yielded just one earned run along the way, while walking none.
Noah Roots tripled to left to start the scoring in Game 2 that scored Lowe, then in the second Notre Dame tied the score at one with a successful double steal of second and home. But the Eagles scored three more in the third when Lowe reached on a throwing error that unloaded the bases, 4-1.
In the fifth, Martinez singled home Ayscue to push the score to 5-1, then
Luke Harnishfeger reached on a fielder's choice that scored the Eagles' sixth run of the day. In the eighth, the Gators added a run to cut into the lead, 6-2, but the Eagles' offense unloaded in the bottom half.
With the bases-loaded, Martinez singled home a pair of runs to extend the lead to 8-2, then Ayscue scored on a balk, 9-2.
Luke Guerzon singled home Martinez, then Stiefman singled home
Eric Powell to push the lead to 11-1. And finally,
Noah Lichter walked it off with an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth to complete the mercy rule.
The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday against Catholic in Fredericksburg, Va. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
