Lowe Becomes Hit King as UMW Baseball Blows By Hampden-Sydney, 16-3

The University of Mary Washington's Ty Lowe already broke the career RBI last season and he left another impression on the Eagles' record book on Sunday as he broke the all-time hits mark with a pair of knocks on Saturday, giving him 250 career hits in UMW's drubbing of Hampden-Sydney, 16-3, in Fredericksburg, Va.

Lowe surpassed Eric Fitzgerald's mark of 248 set back at the end of the 2007 season and he did it in the third inning of a 2-1 ballgame, singling Burke Steifman home to tie the score at a pair of runs. And from that point, it was all Eagles.

After a two-RBI double in the top of the first, UMW scored 11 unanswered runs until a solo homer for the Tigers in the top of the sixth ended UMW's run. In the first, Bobby Ayscue doubled home Steifman to bring it within to 2-1.

In the second, Lowe collected his record-breaking knock, then Noah Roots gave UMW the lead with an RBI single through the right side, 3-2. In the fourth, Oliver Martin collected an RBI single, then Steifman drove home a pair with a two-RBI single of his own to push the lead to 6-2. Then Lowe collected hit No. 250 with an RBI single to add on to the lead, 7-2.

In the fifth, Jacob Christenbury reach on an error, which allowed Tommy Martinez to score from third, then Ayscue drove Martin home to increase the lead to seven, 9-2. Noah Roots was then hit by a pitch to bring home another run, 10-2, and the Eagles added another on a wild pitch that allowed Steifman to score.

The Tigers were finally back on the board with the aforementioned solo homer in the sixth, but the Eagles added five more in the sixth. Ayscue walked with the bases-loaded to score Martinez, then Lowe reached on an error that allowed two more runs to cross, 14-3. Then Roots and Martinez followed with a pair of RBI singles to push the lead to 16-3.

Matthew Boyd turned in another solid start on the bump for UMW as he tossed five innings of two-run ball, working around that two-out double in the first inning. He struck out five, yielding three walks and three hits. Gavin Riley tossed the sixth inning, then Griffin Graham came on for a shutout seventh to finish the win off for Mary Washington.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday at 2 pm against Salisbury in a Coast-to-Coast contest in Fredericksburg, Va.
