McComber's Strong Outing Overshadowed as UMW Baseball Falls to Randolph-Macon, 7-6

The University of Mary Washington's Brendan McComber tossed 7.1 innings of four-run (three earned) ball as the Eagles fell to Randolph-Macon, 7-6, on Thursday evening in Ashland, Va.

McComber came into the ballgame three hitters in after Andrew Poon yielded two base runners to begin the bottom of the first and from there, McComber followed with some of his best baseball of the season. The lefty tossed 123 pitches in the effort, departing with a 6-4 lead and striking out six hitters along the way.

The Eagles got on the board first when George Rizzo scored on a wild pitch in the top of the first inning. The Yellow Jackets tied it in the fourth, but UMW took a 4-1 lead in the sixth that began like this: Charlie Grove reached on a throwing error that scored a run, then Rizzo grounded out to shortstop, scoring Ryan Schwarz. Finally, Jacob Christenbury singled through the left side to bring the second run of the inning home.

In the seventh, Grove drove a sac fly to left field, then Oliver Martin's RBI single added another run to push the lead to 6-1. The Yellow Jackets then scored six runs between the bottom of the seventh and ninth to walk off UMW.

Christenbury collected three knocks, Eric Powell and Schwarz had a pair each. Rizzo, Ayscue, and Martin all had a hit apiece.

The Eagles are back in action on Sunday against Hampden-Sydney at 1 p.m. for Senior Day in Fredericksburg, Va.
