The University of Mary Washington split a Wednesday doubleheader against Messiah on the road.
Game 1 - Eagles lose, 6-5.
UMW fell behind by four runs in the third inning, but mounted a comeback, beginning in the fourth inning.
Taylor Moody roped a sac fly in the fourth inning to cut into the lead, 4-1. In the fifth and sixth, the Eagles scored three runs to tie the score at four, beginning with
Hannah Steele's bunt single that drove in
Abby Fielder. Then, Steele scored on a passed ball to cut into the deficit, 4-3. In the sixth
Erica Shoop singled home
Brigid Ward to tie the score at four runs.
Messiah took the lead in the bottom of the sixth, but UMW tied it with
Shelby Presgrave's RBI single at five runs apiece. But in the bottom of the seventh, Messiah walked it off.
Game 2 - Eagles win, 7-5.
The Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead when
Emily Angel started the scoring with an RBI single, then
Sofia Marshall added another run with a sac fly to push the lead to 2-0. Ward then singled down the left field line to score Angel and push the lead to 3-0. And finally, Ward and Presgrave pulled off a successful double steal of second and home to push it to 4-0.
Messiah scored three in the bottom of the first. In the third, though, the Eagles scored three runs to push the lead to 7-3. Ward reached on an error that scored Angel, then
Erica Shoop singled home both Ward and Marshall for UMW's final three tallies.
Messiah scored a run in the third, then again in the seventh.
Sydney Jester came on in relief, tossing 6.2 innings, yielding just two earned runs on five hits and one walk, while striking out a pair of runs.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday for their two final games on the road against Christopher Newport in Newport News. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
