The University of Mary Washington baseball team (RV) lost a close game to Shenandoah (RV) on Wednesday evening in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Hornets struck first in the second on an RBI single before the Eagles took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on on
Noah Roots' fourth home run of the season that snuck just inside of the right field foul pole to put UMW in front, 2-1.
The Hornets struck for a run in the third, fifth, and sixth innings to take a 4-2 lead before Mary Washington clawed back when
Bobby Ayscue smoked a ball that went under the third baseman's glove to score
George Rizzo to cut into the lead, 4-3.
But in the end, including an eighth inning with runners on first and second, the Eagles couldn't push across the game-tying score.
Ty Lowe went three shutout innings out of the bullpen to finish the game off, yielding just two hits and a pair of strikeouts. The Eagles collected five hits, in which Rizzo had one, Roots collected a pair, while
Ryan Schwarz and
Jacob Christenbury each had one each.
The Eagles are back in action against Randolph-Macon at 3:30 pm tomorrow afternoon in Ashland, Va.
