Senior
Henry Moag scored three goals and added three assists, and first year
Tanner Boone netted four goals and added an assist to lead the University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team to a 19-16 victory over St. Mary's College of MD on Tuesday evening at the Battleground. Junior
Dave Votapek scored four times for the Eagles, who improve to 9-7 on the season.
The Eagles jumped ahead with a pair of rapid-fire goals to open the contest. Moag scored both, first on an assist from
Keller Dillman at 13:00, and again from
Jacob Fowler at 12:51. The Seahawks responded with a pair of their own, before Votapek scored on a
Dylan Frost assist at 5:13. Senior
Sterling Colgan added another at 3:58, and Boone added his first of the night at 1:57. SMCM scored once to end the first and again twice to open the second to knot the score at 5-5.Â
UMW then took over, scoring five goals in a six minute span. Boone started the run on an assist from
Jackson Rhodes at 11:07, and Fowler gained the faceoff and finished with a score just eight seconds later. Colgan then scored a pair, on assists from
Ryan Adams and Moag, before Boone capped the rally at 5:11. The Seahawks scored with three minutes left to draw to within 10-6 at halftime.
The teams traded goals to start the third quarter, with Votapek scoring on a Boone assist at 13:17. Moag then scored at 11:11 on a
Bryce Ridge assist, and Boone added another at 8:11 to push the Eagle lead to 13-7. St. Mary's scored a pair to cut into the lead, but UMW used two late goals from Votapek to lead, 15-9, entering the fourth quarter.
After a SMCM score to open the fourth, Frost scored on a Moag pass, and Greyson reylek gained the faceoff win before feeding
Antonio Zeno for another tally ten seconds later. St. Mary's scored five of the next six scores, with Frost netting UMW's goal, but a
Reece Stone score with 2:34 left, and a quality stall to end the contest gave the Eagles the hard earned win.
The Eagles led in shots, 51-42, as well as ground balls, 53-47. UMW goalkeeper
Wyatt Martin gained the win with 11 saves, while All-American
Keegan Shipe posted nine ground balls and four caused turnovers.
UMW will host Stockton University on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. in the first round of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference tournament at the Battleground.
