The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dug an early hole, battled back to force overtime, but fell just before the final horn to Stockton University in the first round of the Coastal Lacrosse Conference Tournament first round on Sunday at the Battleground. The Eagles close the season with a 9-8 record.
Stockton came out firing, building a 2-0 lead, before the Eagles responded with a pair of goals of their own to knot the score. First year
Tanner Boone scored on a
Tommy Jackson assist at 9:19, and Jackson added a goal of his own at 8:05. Stockton then scored three straight to close the first quarter to take a 5-2 lead to the second quarter.
Jackson scored to open the second at 11:02, but the Ospreys countered with one, before the Eagles netted a pair to draw back to within one.
Dylan Frost scored at 7:28, and
Sterling Colgan added another at 2:07. Stockton capped the second quarter scoring, and added another to open the third, extending the margin to 8-5.
UMW scored the other two goals in the third, as Boone scored at 10:23. and Jackson added another at 2:17, and the score stood at 8-7 entering the fourth quarter. Both offenses started finding more success in the fourth, as the teams traded the next six scores, with
Jacob Fowler,
Reece Stone, and
Henry Moag finding the nets for the Eagles. Frost scored on a Colgan assist with 2:19 left to tie the score once again, and sent the game to overtime.
In the extra frame, both teams had their chances, but Stockton scored the decider at the final horn for the win. The Eagles led in shots, 50-35, and won 23 of 27 faceoffs. UMW goalkeeper
