Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

UMW Women's Lax Falls to St. Mary's, 8-6; Daw Nets #100

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped an 8-6 decision to visiting St. Mary's College of MD on Wednesday evening at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 10-4 on the season.

In a card-plagued, defensive struggle, the Seahawks netted the only two scores of the first quarter. Senior Tori Mueller scored on an assist from classmate Molly Daw in the opening minute of the second, before SMC added another to lead, 3-1, and that score stood until halftime.

Sophomore Abigail Fisher brought the Eagles to within 3-2 with 8:18 left in the third, but the Seahawks scored one to close the third and one to open the fourth to expand its lead to 5-2.

First year Ava Windham scored on a free position shot to open the fourth for the Eagles, but the Seahawks added two more, before Daw scored to draw UMW to within 7-4 with 6:00 left. After another SMC goal, the Eagles added late scores from Fisher and Daw, but ran out of time before drawing any closer.

The Eagles led in shots, 27-24, and both teams grabbed 19 ground balls. UMW goalkeeper Allison Carolan made eight saves.

UMW will return to action on Friday when the Eaglles face Stevens Tech at the US Lacrosse Headquarters in Sparks, Md. at 7 p.m.
