The University of Mary Washington baseball team survived a late comeback attempt against Eastern Mennonite on Tuesday evening, downing the Royals, 11-9, in Harrisonburg, Va.
The Eagles fell behind a run in the third inning before tying the score on
Eric Powell's RBI knock in the fifth, then but EMU re-took the lead in the bottom half an RBI single of its own.
In the sixth, though, UMW's bats came alive with a six-run sixth as
Bobby Ayscue tied the game with a single, then
Connor Hassan gave UMW the lead for good by drawing a bases-loaded walk, 3-2. Then Powell followed with a walk of his own, next
Oliver Martin was hit-by-a-pitch to extend the lead to three, 5-2. Following that was
Jacob Christenbury's two-RBI single to extend the lead to five, 7-2.
In the eighth, the Eagles added a three more when Martin singled a run home, then
Ryan Schwarz capped the inning with a two-RBI double, 10-2.
The Royals added three in the bottom of the eighth to chip into the lead, 10-5, but the Eagles added an insurance run when Ayscue scored on a wild pitch. Then the Royals brought the score to within a pair, 11-9, in the bottom half of the inning after scoring four runs. EMU left the tying run on second base as Hassan struck out the final hitter to end the game.
Gavin Riley was solid on the bump for the Eagles, yielding just two runs in six innings, while scattering eight hits and two hits, striking out five batters in the process.
Matthew Boyd worked a clean seventh before Hassan collected his fourth save of the season by retiring three hitters in the ninth.
The Eagles are back in action on Sunday against Notre Dame of Maryland for a doubleheader. First pitch in Fredericksburg is set for 12 p.m.
