The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-12 decision to visiting Hampden-Sydney College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 3-4 on the season.
Both teams started slowly on offense, as neither team would score until HSC netted a goal with 8:41 left in the first. The Eagles quickly responded, as
Dave Votapek scored on a
Keller Dillman assist at 6:45, and junior
Jacob Fowler scored the ground ball on his faceoff win and took it all the way to score nine seconds later.
The Tigers pulled ahead by scoring the final three goals of the first and the first three of the second, but the Eagles responded with a big comeback.
Tanner Boone capped the second quarter scoring, pulling UMW to within 7-3.
Both offenses had little trouble in the third, as the Tigers opened the scoring, but UMW reeled off three straight. Senior
Henry Moag started the run, scoring and drawing a penalty at 10:47. With the man up, UMW scored again, as
Dylan Frost scored on a
Dave Votapek assist just 21 seconds later. The Eagles kept applying pressure, and netted another 22 seconds later, as
Reece Stone scored on a Moag assist at 10:04, to draw the Eagles to within 8-6.
The Tigers answered with two scores, but UMW would respond with three more, as
Carter Lynch scored with 5:28 left,
Ryan Adams added another with 3:35 on the clock, and Votapek scored on an assist from Fowler at 3:28 following another faceoff win. HSC seemed to grab momentum with five seconds left with a goal, but the Eagles again pulled to within one at 11-10 just before the final horn of the third, as Votapek and Fowler once again connected.
The teams traded goals to open the fourth, with Frost scoring on a Votapek assist, but HSC scored the next two to go up, 14-11, in the final minute. Votapek scored on a Moag assist in the waning seconds to pull the final to 14-12.
The Eagles led in shots, 47-37, and in ground balls, 44-41. UMW goalkeeper
Wyatt Martin made 12 saves on the day, and Fowler scored 11 ground balls and won 16-24 faceoffs.
UMW will return to action next Saturday when the Eagles host Baldwin Wallace College at noon.
