UMW Baseball Slugs Its Way to Doubleheader Sweep Over Southern Vrginia

The University of Mary Washington had no issues in its pair of victories over Southern Virginia on Saturday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Game 1, Eagles win - 13-4

The Eagles got off to a fast start in the third inning when Connor Hassan bunted Tommy Martinez home to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead, then Ryan Schwarz singled home a run to put UMW on top, 2-0.

Then in the fifth, UMW erupted for eight runs to run away with the win. It began like this: Jacob Christenbury singled home Martinez with the bases loaded, then Schwarz drove in his second run of the game with a sac fly that was dropped by the right fielder, allowing him to reach on an error. Then, Noah Roots increased the lead from five to eight when he doubled home three runs. Then, Ty Lowe singled home a run to increase the Eagles' lead to 9-0.

And finally, Hassan grounded out to score another run, then Eric Powell scored on a wild pitch as the Eagles then led, 10-0.

In the sixth, Bobby Ayscue homered to increase UMW's lead to 13-4.

Ty Lowe pitched five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and a walk without allowing a run to score.

Game 2, Eagles win - 10-1

UMW started out fast once again with a pair runs in the first inning when Ty Lowe doubled home Christenbury, then Ayscue singled home another run. The Knights countered with a run in the second, but it was all UMW from there.

In the third, Tommy Martinez recorded a bases-clearing triple, then Luke Guerzon drove in a run in the fifth to increase UMW's lead to 5-1. Then Christenbury singled home a pair of runs, then Noah Roots drove  in two more after reaching on an error.

Ryan Henson (two innings), Ryan Northup (win; three innings), Griffin Graham (one inning), and Reece Hamilton (one inning) combined to strikeout 10 over the seven innings of work as the Eagles made quick work of the Knights.'
