The University of Mary Washington softball team overcame a late New York University push to down the Violets, 5-4, in the Triangle Classic in Raleigh, N.C.
The Eagles jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first on
Shelby Presgrave's sac fly, giving starting pitcher
Sydney Jester a lead early on. Jester turned in 5.1 innings, yielding four runs, while striking out four.
NYU tied it with a solo homer in the fifth, but the Eagles scored a pair in the sixth when
Erica Shoop drove in the first with a sac fly, then
Brigid Ward scored on
Hannah Steele's sac bunt, 3-1. NYU scored another in the sixth, 3-2, but UMW scored twice more in the seventh to avoid an NYU spoiler.
Presgrave drove in the first run on an RBI single, then Ward drove in the other with a groundout, 5-2. And in the seventh,
Anna Dobson recorded the final two outs, holding off NYU's late push for her first save of the season.
The Eagles are back in action at 3:30 p.m. against Oberlin for their second game of the Triangle Classic.
