The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept Stevenson on Thursday afternoon, 2-1 and 14-4, to wrap up its Myrtle Beach trip in South Carolina.
Connor Hassan recorded his eighth career save -- the most in program history.
In Game 1, the Eagles got an excellent start from
Justin Ritz, who tossed 5.2 innings of one-run ball before handing the baseball to Hassan for the final four outs and his third save of the season. Ritz moved to 4-0 this season after fanning nine batters and lowered his season ERA to 1.31 in 20.2 innings.
Mary Washington jumped out to a 1-0 lead when
Noah Roots drove home
Jacob Christenbury on a groundout, then in the fourth,
Ty Lowe did the same to give UMW a 2-0 lead.
Ritz was cruising until the sixth, getting the first two outs before handing the baseball to Hassan for the final four outs of the afternoon.
In Game 2, Mary Washington wasted no time jumping out to a large lead, scoring eight times before taking the field on defense. The first inning went like this: Lowe singled home a pair of batters, while Roots scored on a wild pitch to put UMW up, 3-0.
Charlie Grove reached on a fielder's choice that scored Lowe, then Christenbury doubled home a pair of runs to put the Eagles up by six. And finally,
Ryan Schwarz singled home a pair of runs to put UMW up by eight.
Brendan McComber got the start for the Eagles as he picked up his second win of the season, tossing four innings of three-run (one earned) ball, while striking out eight batters.
In the second, Grove singled home another run to extend UMW's lead to 9-1, then in the fourth, Christenbury singled home another run before Schwarz did the same. Then in the fifth, Ayscue scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead, 12-3. And finally, in the seventh,
Nate Dulevitz and
Mike Dennis added a pair of RBI singles to cap off the offensive explosion.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday with a doubleheader against Southern Virginia.
