Senior attacker
Molly Daw scored four goals, and senior midfielder Tori Mueller added three to lead the University of Mary Washingon women's lacrosse team to a 10-7 victory over 12th ranked Roanoke College on Thursday afternoon in Memphis, Tennessee. The Eagles eclipse last season's win total with the victory, as they improve to 6-1 on the season.
Sophomore
Abigail Fisher took the opening draw and scored in the opening minute on a
Taylar Hackney assist. After a Roanoke goal, Muller scored unassisted at 9:17, but the Maroons answered with four straight to take a 5-2 advantage at the conclusion of the first quarter.
Daw then netted consecutive scores at 10:50 and 9:57, and Mueller added her second of the day with 6:41 left before halftime in tying the score. Roanoke added the final goal of the quarter to lead, 6-5, at halftime.
Once again, the Eagle defense stood tall in the second half, allowing just one goal in the final 30 minutes. UMW used a 4-1 scoring advantage in the third to take control. Daw scored at 14:05, and again at 11:35, before Roanoke scored to move the score to 7-7. From there, Mueller scored with 2:29 left, and
Ashley Firesheets added another with 30 seconds left, and UMW carried a 9-7 lead to the fourth.
In the final 15 minutes, Fisher scored on a
Sadie Laughlin assist midway through, and the defense pitched a shutout.
The Eagles led in shots, 38-19, as well as draw controls, 14-7.
Allison Carolan made five saves while allowing just one tally in he second half, and
Cece Van Blenis made one save in the opening 30 minutes.
UMW will return to action on Monday, when the Eagles host Methodist University at 3:00 p.m.
