The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team scored seven first quarter goals and overcame a late charge to defeat Washington College, 15-13, on Wdnesday evening in Chestertown, Md. The Eagles even their season record at 3-3.
After allowing the first score, the Eagles struck quickly, as
Tanner Boone scored off a faceoff win and assist from
Jacob Fowler at 13:11. Just 1:18 later,
Nathan Turney scored on a
Bryce Ridge assist to give UMW the lead. After the Shoremen tied the score, the Eagles reeled off five straight goals to take charge.
Mike Seraphin-Jones scored at 4:36, and one minute later,
Tommy Jackson put he Eagles up, 4-2.
Dylan Frost continued the surge at 2:25 on a
Dave Votapek assist, and
Ryan Adams added another less than a minute later.
Keegan Shipe scored with 1:17 to cap the run, before a Wash College score cut the Eagle lead to 7-3 after 15 minutes.
Votapek scored on a Turney assist with 9:24 left in the second, and
Henry Moag added another after two Shoremen goals. Washington capped the quarter scoring, giving UMW a 9-6 halftime lead.
Washington opened the third scoring three of the first four goals, with a Jackson goal coming on a Moag assist for UMW. The Eagles used late scores from Boone and
Reece Stone to take a 12-9 lead to the fourth.
Dylan Frost and
Carter Lynch put the Eagles up, 14-9, early in the fourth, before the Shoremen scored four straight to pull to within one in the final minutes, but Votapek scored on a Lynch assist to clinch in the final minute.
The balanced Eagle attack saw 11 people score. UMW outshot WAC, 51-37, and held a 41-40 ground ball edge. UMW goalkeeper
Wyatt Martin made 13 saves.
The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday, when they host Hampden-Sydney College at 1:00 p.m.
