The University of Mary Washington baseball team used nine innings of two run ball from its three arms to get past Christopher Newport (RV) on Saturday afternoon, 6-2, in Fredericksburg, Va.
The Eagles got five innings of one-run ball from starter
Justin Ritz, three-and-two thirds from
Brendan McComber, while
Connor Hassan faced the final two hitters before securing the Eagles' first win over the Captains since 2023.
Ritz yielded his lone run in the second inning as the Eagles had led 2-0 due to RBIs from
Bobby Ayscue and
Ty Lowe in the bottom of the first, but from there on for Ritz, he shut the Captains downa s he held them to five hits and struck out one hitter.
In the top of the third, UMW extended its lead back to two when Lowe roped an RBI single back up the middle, then Ayscue did the same in the fifth to push the lead to 4-1. In the sixth, McComber allowed his first run on an RBI double, but settled down the rest of the way as he also worked around five base knocks to blank the Captains from there on out.
In the sixth, UMW extended its lead again as
Burke Steifman reached on a two-base error that drove in a pair of runs with two outs in the inning, 6-2.
McComber then pitched until there were a pair of outs in the ninth as runners stood on first and second. A walk from Hassan loaded the bases but a ground out ended the Captains late threat.
The Eagles are back in action on April 1 at Eastern Mennonite. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m.
