The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team knocked off 18th ranked Denison University, 13-11, on Sunday afternoon in Granville, Ohio. The Eagles improve to 10-1 on the season, and take down their second top-20 ranked opponent of the season.
Denison opened the game by jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the first 3:02 of play. The Eagles answered right back, scoring four straight to close the quarter. Senior
Molly Daw opened the scoring at 10:42, and sophomore
Abigail Fisher tied the score at 2-2 at 7:23. Senior
Tori Mueller put the Eagles ahead with a tally with 4:00 on the clock, and
Taylar Hackney added another with 18 seconds left.
In the second quarter, the Eagles extended their lead, with goals from
Ashley Firesheets at 12:24 assisted by Daw, and then from Mueller at 10:45. The Big Red stopped the run with a goal, but UMW came right back with two more scores, from Daw (assisted by Fisher) at 2:58, and Mueller at 2:23. Denison scored two late to draw to within 8-5.
Denison got back into the game with three straight goals in the third quarter, tying the score at 8-8. Mueller gave the Eagles momentum back as well as the lead with 47 seconds left in the quarter.
After Denison scored to open the fourth, UMW then went on a pivotal four-goal run to put the matter to bed. Fisher started the run with a free position shot at 13:02, and Daw followed with another at 8:31.
Kimber Konen added another on a Daw feed at 7:17, and Mueller added yet another on a free position at 3:43. Denison added two late goals, but their comeback fell short.
The Eagles were outshot, 30-28, but forced 14 Big Red turnovers. UMW goalkeeper
Allison Carolan made eight saves in gaining the win.Â
