The University of Mary Washington men's lacrosse team outlasted Catholic University, 8-7, on Wednesday evening at a cool Battleground Turf Stadium. The Eagles improve to 5-4 on the season.
UMW started the sparse scoring, as senior
Carter Lynch scored unassisted at 11:51 of the first. Catholic responded with a pair of scores to take the lead, and held the lead to the second quarter.
The defenses continued to shine in the second, as the lone goal scored was a tying tally from senior
Henry Moag, who scored unassisted with 9:10 left.
The Eagles jumped ahead with a strong third, as
Dylan Frost scored on a Lynch assist at 10:59. The Cards would again knot the score at 3-3, but UMW responded with scores from Moag at 4:36 and Lynch (from
Dave Votapek) at 3:36 to carry a 5-3 edge to the fourth.
Catholic opened the fourth with a goal one minute into the action, but the Eagles used a Votapek score assisted by
Ryan Adams at 13:02 to kickstart a three-goal outburst.
Reece Stone scored at 10:42, and senior
Balin Galbraith added what would prove to be the game winner at 9:48.
Catholic climbed back into contention with three goals of their own, and had several possessions in the final minutes, but were denied by the Eagle defense.
The Eagles led in shots, 46-40, as well as ground balls, 38-35. UMW goalkeeper
Wyatt Martin turned in a strong performance with 14 saves.
UMW will return to action for the fourth game of the homestand by hosting Marymount University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
