The University of Mary Washington baseball team outslugged Marymount in a 16-7 finish on Tuesday evening in Tysons, Virginia.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead when
Noah Roots doubled home
Ryan Schwarz, then
Bobby Ayscue beat out a fielder's choice that scored
Noah Roots to put UMW up by a pair of runs. Marymount countered with a run off in the third to cut into the deficit.
In the fourth, though, Mary Washington added two more when
Connor Hassan singled home
Ty Lowe, then
Oliver Martin did the same a batter later to put UMW up by three, 4-1. In the fifth,
Eric Powell drove in another run after reaching on an error, then
Tommy Martinez doubled home Powell to put UMW by five, 6-1.Â
The Saints added another run in the bottom half of the inning to cut into the lead, 6-2, then added another in the sixth. In the seventh,
Connor Hassan smoked a grand slam to up the Eagles margin to 10-3 before Marymount added four runs in the bottom half of the inning, 10-7.
Ty Lowe homered in the eighth to tack on two more, then Martinez singled home Ayscue, before Martin added another RBI single to his line as the Eagles led, 14-7. In the ninth, Martinez drew a bases-loaded walk, then Hassan added another run on a sac fly as UMW then led by nine, 16-7.
Gavin Riley tossed 5.2 innings, yielding three runs as he worked around six hits and three walks, while striking out a pair.
Ryan Henson,
Griffin Graham, and
Jackson Beale finished off the game for the Eagles on the bump.
Mary Washington is back in action on Thursday against Randolph-Macon in Ashland, Va. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
