The 27th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team edged #16 Washington and Lee University, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon at the Hegmann Family Tennis Courts. The Eagles improve to 9-2 on the season.
The Eagles started swiftly by scoring wins in all three doubles matches. At one,
Trevor Rein and
Jack Riordan defeated Will Kistler and Evan Erb, 6-3, and
Evan Fisher and
Brock Ladehoff defeated Ryan Good and James Kurani, 6-4.
Will Fromherz and
Matt Scott defeated Eli Hirshberg and Heys Parker at three, 6-1, as the Eagles moved to singles with momentum.
In singles play, the Eagles gained points from Rein at one and Ladehoff at two, as the former topped Kistler, 6-3, 7-5, and the latter topped Kurani, 6-3, 6-2, at two. The Generals scored points at five and six, and with a pair of matches going to a third set, the Eagles led, 3-2.
The Generals scored the three set win at four to tie the team score, but at three, sophomore
Evan Fisher gained a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory over Hirshberg for the deciding match point.
The Eagles will be back in action on Friday, when they face Kenyon College in Newport News, Va. at 9:00 a.m.
