The University of Mary Washington softball team split a Monday doubleheader with Methodist on Monday afternoon in Fayetteville, N.C.
Game 1 - Eagles win, 8-4
In Game 1, the Monarchs jumped out in front with a solo homer in the bottom of the first, but the Eagles then went on to score three unanswered runs. In the second,
Linsey Spillman singled home
Brigid Ward to tie the game at one, then in the third,
Hannah Steele drove a ball down the left field line that rattled around for an inside the park home run which gave UMW the lead, 2-1. In the fourth, UMW added another on an
Emily Mousso single that scored
Erica Shoop, 3-1.
Methodist cut into the lead with a run in the fourth, 3-2, but an
Emily Angel home run extended the lead, 4-2. Later in the fifth, Mousso singled home Shoop again, while Carys Golhmann capped the inning off with a two-RBI double as the Eagles then led, 7-2.
Methodist added two more runs, but it was
Allyson Jones who added another run to ice the game in the seventh, 8-4.
The Eagles got an excellent start from
Sydney Jester, who went seven innings, allowing just two earned runs (four total) with a pair of strikeouts.
Game 2 - Eagles lose, 6-5
In Game 2, Mary Washington trailed by a pair of runs early before storming back with four of their own in the third. Ward doubled a pair of runners home to open the scoring and tie the game at two, while Shoop then doubled Ward home, and finally
Emma Dickson capped the inning off with an RBI single, 4-2.
Methodist got another run back in the third, 4-3, but Mousso extended the lead back to two runs with an RBI single in the fifth. Methodist then scored two in the fifth to tie the game at 5, then eventually walked off UMW in the eighth.
The Eagles are back in action on Thursday with a doubleheader against Randolph-Macon. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
