Torrid Shooting Leads UMW Men's Basketball Past Salisbury, 86-53

The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team turned in perhaps its best shooting performance of the season in a lopsided 86-53 decision over visiting Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in a battle of Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference squads at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 9-12 on the season.

UMW shot 16-29 from behind the three-point arc for the day (55.2%), as the Eagles shot 31-61 overall. UMW started from the opening tip, as fifth year senior Zack Blue connected on a pair of three pointers, and sophomore Jadon Burgess added another, as the Eagles built a 9-4 lead.

Blue connected on another to up the margin to 12-6, as the Eagles made an astounding 11-19 three-point attempts in the opening 20 minutes. UMW led by 13 at halftime, 42-29.

In the second half, rather than cool off, the Eagles offense and defense turned their efforts up a notch, opening the second with a 24-4 run to put the result out of reach.

Burgess led the Eagles with 19 points, making 6-12 shots (5-11 from behind the arc), while Blue made 6-11 shots en route to 15 points. Sophomore Jay Randall and freshman Ulysses Young each scored 10 points as well. Kye Robinson added eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

While the Eagles shot 50.8% from the floor for the day (31-61), Salisbury made 19-39 shots (46.2%), including 3-14 from three-point range. The teams ended with 28 rebounds apiece, and Salisbury committed 23 turnovers, while UMW committed just nine.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Eastern Mennonite University at 7:00 p.m.
