Kye Robinson scored a game-high 24 points, and sophomore forward
Jay Randall added 21, as the University of Mary Washington men's basketball team defeated Eastern Mennonite University, 83-71, on Thursday evening in Harrisonburg, Va. The Eagles improve to 10-12 on the season.
Randall opened the scoring with four straight points, as the Eagles built a 10-2 lead in the opening five minutes. A three pointer from first year
Jose Fudd upped the margin to double figures, at 25-13, with 10:49 remaining. The Eagles led by as many as 16, at 35-19, with 5:58 left. The Royals trimmed the margin to single digits just before halftime, before a Randall basket just before intermission gave the Eagles a 46-35 lead.
While the Eagles cooled from the field in the second, the Eagle lead remained intact, as UMW edged the hosts, 37-36, in the second half, connecting on 10-13 free throws.
Robinson scored his 24 points on 8-11 shooting from the floor (2-3 from distance), and 6-7 from the free throw line. Randall netted 21 points on 10-14 shooing from the field, and 1-2 from the charity stripe. Sophomore
Jadon Burgess also reached double figures with 11 points and also added nine rebounds, tying with Randall for the team lead.
The Eagles shot 32-62 from the floor (51.6%), making 5-21 three point shots and 14-20 free throws. Eastern Mennonite shot 25-51 (49.0%), making 11-25 three point attempts and 10-12 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounds, 38-24, and held a 21-3 advantage in points off of turnovers.
UMW will be back in action on Saturday when the Eagles visit Christopher Newport Universiy at 6:00 p.m.
