The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team dropped a 71-55 decision at 12th ranked Christopher Newport University on Saturday evening in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 10-13 on the season.
CNU jumped out to an early 8-2 lead, but six straight points from the Eagles knotted the score with 15:09 remaining in the first. The Eagles trailed by as many as nine in the first half, before using a 7-4 run to close the half, and cutting the deficit to six at intermission.
In the second, five straight points from CNU opened the lead to double figures, before a three pointer from
Kye Robinson and basket from
Ulysses Young trimmed the margin to six in the opening minutes. Another Captain run saw the lead swell to as many as 21 before the Eagles used a closing 8-0 run to pull to within 16 at the final horn.
First year guard
Ulysses Young led the Eagles with 15 points on 5-13 shooting, while Robinson and fifth year guard
Zack Blue each scored eight. Blue led with seven rebounds, and Robinson led with four assists.
UMW shot 30.6% from the floor (19-62), making 6-19 three point attempts and 11-22 free throws. CNU shot 48.4% (31-64), making 3-19 three point shots and 6-8 free throws. CNU led in rebounding, 48-32.
The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they visit Salisbury University at 7:00 p.m.
