The University of Mary Washington men's basketball team fell in a heartbreaker to Marymount on Wednesday night in Arlington, Va., 73-71. Mary Washington's
Jay Randall led all scorers with 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting, while
Kye Robinson had 15 points on a 7-of-13 clip from the floor.
The Eagles led by five just over three minutes into the game (8-3) when
Jadon Burgess nailed a 3-pointer before Marymount battled back to tie the score at eight just over a minute later. For the rest of the half, UMW and Marymount more or less continued to trade baskets before going into the break at a 28-all tie.
In the second half, the Eagles led by as many as eight, 48-40, with just over 12 minutes to go, but couldn't pull away. The Saints came back to tie the game at 50 with 10 minutes to play, while both teams began to trade baskets again until the last 20 seconds of action.
The Eagles led by three points before Marymount nailed a layup with nine seconds to go to cut the deficit to one. Then, after a foul and missed free throw with five seconds left, the Eagles fouled the Saints' Rueben McEachren on a desperation attempt with two seconds left to send McEahren to the free throw line for three shots. McEachren nailed all three foul shots as the Eagles' lead turned into a two-point deficit.
All told, UMW was 29-of-52 (55.8%) from the floor, which included a 6-of-17 mark from deep (35.3%), while the Saints were 25-of-51 from the floor and 3-for-15 from beyond the arc (20%). Marymount won the rebound battle, 32-22, but committed 15 turnovers compared to Mary Washington's 13.
The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Salisbury at 3 p.m. in Fredericksburg, Va.
